I was extremely fortunate today to have been invited aboard the LV 196/ WAL 534 sitting in Ketchikan, AK.
I contacted the owner, he in turn provided one of his employees and a power boat and gave us free run. I am attaching a bunch of pictures for your information, taken by my host, Tom Lecompt. Tom lives within a stones throw but had never been aboard, The Lightship Sailors was his excuse.
We made a fabulous discovery in one of the filing cabinets back in officers country. A real treasure trove of original logs, inspection reports, machinery logs, blue prints. The dates were as far back as 1947. I estimate the total weight of all documents to be around 40#. I have asked the owner for permission to copy all of this. He will look it over and let me know how to proceed.
In passing: the owner, is the owner, of all types of marine business's, tug boats, barge service, cruise lines etc. He is a collector, not a seller. I don't have any reason to believe the 196 will continue to sit where she is and continue to decay.
